We prepare our schools for earthquakes through structural and non-structural mitigation, training, drills, supplies, and partnerships.
All LOSD schools conduct two earthquake drills during the school year, typically in April for Earthquake Preparedness Month. Additionally, some buildings conduct a second drill in October during the Great Oregon Shake Out.
Each school site is equipped with:
-
Two-way radios: For communication during emergencies if normal methods are unavailable.
-
Emergency buckets: Classrooms have buckets with basic emergency supplies, water, and non-allergenic snacks.
-
Emergency first aid kits: Each site has a rolling hard case stocked with first aid supplies.
During an earthquake, students and staff will:
-
Drop, Cover, and Hold On until the shaking stops.
-
Teachers will check for injured students.
-
Staff will evacuate everyone to a secure open area, such as the athletic field or playground, due to potential building damage and aftershocks.
-
Each teacher will bring students to a designated area where all students will be accounted for.
