Arab American Heritage Month
April 1-30
The Lake Oswego School Board has approved a resolution designating April as Arab American Heritage Month within our district. This initiative encourages our learning community to integrate instructional activities that highlight the significant contributions of Arab Americans throughout the academic year.
For well over a century, Arab Americans have been integral to every facet of American society, excelling in fields such as science, medicine, law, business, education, technology, government, and military service. Individuals of Arab descent have shared their vibrant culture and traditions and exemplified model citizenship and public service. They have brought resilient family values, a strong work ethic, a commitment to education, and a diversity of faith and creed, all of which have strengthened the fabric of our democracy. Moreover, Arab Americans have actively participated in and enriched our entrepreneurial spirit, contributing to the freedom and prosperity of our nation.
Celebrating Arab American ancestry and cultural heritage educates our fellow citizens and challenges misconceptions, harmful stereotypes, and shared abuses experienced by other ethnic groups.
