Elementary School Behavior Expectations – Parent/Guardian Compact

At Lake Oswego School District, we believe every child has the right to learn in a safe, respectful, and welcoming environment. To achieve this, our schools have aligned behavior expectations across all elementary schools. Families play a vital role in helping children meet these expectations.

Student Behavior Expectations

  • Be Kind/Respectful: Use kind words and actions, follow adult directions, honor differences, and respect school property.
  • Be Well/Responsible:  Arrive ready to learn, follow school/classroom rules, use technology safely and responsibly, and take ownership of actions.
  • Be Strong/Safe: Keep hands, feet, and objects to self, use equipment appropriately, and remain in approved areas.
 

Levels of Behavior & Responses

  • Level 1 – Mild (Teacher-Managed): Minor disruptions, lack of focus, language slips, or careless accidents. Teachers respond with reteaching, reminders, and restorative practices.
  • Level 2 – Moderate (Teacher + Parent Involvement): Repeated disruptions, refusal to follow directions, inappropriate language, mean-spirited physical contact. Teachers will contact parents and may involve support staff.
  • Level 3 – Significant (Administrator Involvement + Parent Involvement): Behaviors that cause harm, threats, harassment, eloping, vandalism, bias/ racial discrimination, or unsafe conduct. Administrators determine disciplinary action, then contact parents; discipline may include suspension.
 

Parent/Guardian Partnership

Parents/guardians are expected to:

  • Collaborate with school personnel
  • Reinforce appropriate behavior and expectations at home
  • Support their child’s academic, social, and personal growth
  • Communicate promptly with teachers or administrators when concerns arise.
  • Encourage safe, respectful, and age-appropriate use of technology.
 

Our Commitment

School staff will:

  • Teach, model, and reinforce positive behavior and responsible use of technology through Social-Emotional Learning, restorative practices, modeling, and positive reinforcement.
  • Respond consistently and fairly to inappropriate behavior
  • Provide a safe, inclusive, and supportive learning environment for every student
  • Respect and protect each child’s confidentiality. Please know that school staff can only share information regarding your own child, not other students.
