Dear LOSD Families,
Moments ago, we learned that Governor Kate Brown announced an extension of Oregon’s statewide school closure to a total of six weeks, through April 28, and issued an executive order for Oregon’s public schools. This is difficult news for us all.
As we navigate this new terrain, the district team and I are continuing to develop resources and make plans, and will keep you apprised how we will support our students, staff and families in light of the extended school closure announced to all of us moments ago.
At this time, I have three additional items to share with you in support of families:
New remote learning resources on the LOSD website
Free childcare for first responders, emergency workers, health care professionals
A survey to help guide our planning
New Remote Learning Resources:
LOSD has expanded its resources and guidance for learning activities at home. These remote learning resources are available on the LOSD website under Family Resources During School Closure → Remote Learning.
We hope that parents can partner with children to complete these activities. Some will include learning with devices and technology, while others do not; these are similar to the student experience during a typical school day.
We recognize that these activities do not replace classroom instruction. No new content will be introduced and no assignments will be graded.
Although some of these resources are already regularly used in school, we hope that students have opportunities to try something new or show their learning in a new way.
Hard copies of some learning materials will be available. More information coming soon.
Free Child Care:
As a service to the community during this demanding time for parents and guardians, Play Boutique in Lake Oswego is offering free child care for first responders, emergency workers and health care professionals. Play Boutique provides an indoor play space and enrichment classes for children ages one to ten years old. Space is limited. Please request a spot for your child by sending an email request to: peakeacademyLO@playboutique.
LOSD staff needs to know this week if your family is able to access the Internet and/or needs a device at home for schoolwork. Please click here for a link to complete the survey.
We understand and appreciate that you have many questions. We are working on understanding the guidance from the governor and how it impacts LOSD specifically. We will be working diligently on answering your questions and providing direction as soon as possible. Thank you for your patience and support as we work through this dynamic and complex time.
Dr. Lora de la Cruz, Superintendent, LOSD
