Nordic Culture Week
Experience Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden!
River Grove students will be enjoying many fun activities throughout the week. They will be learning some traditional music, dance, games and crafts. We will need several parent volunteers for the week. Please check the links in the list to the left.

Fun Activities - The River Grove library is undergoing a transformation to a "Norse Hall" where students will have the opportunity to create "Woven Hearts", play the Swedish game of Kubb, and sample some traditional foods.
Artist-In_Residence - In P.E. classes, students will be learning Nordic folk dances with director and dance instructor, Christie Stilson, of Portland Leikarringen children’s dance group. http://www.norskerunddansere.org/for-kids.html
In Music, students will be learning from Sibelius Academy training musician, Elisa Määttänen Boynton. Ms. Määttänenwill be teaching students about the 19thcentury poetry and mythology of the Finnish Kalevala through song and the Finnish musical instruments of the kantele and the jouhikko. https://privatelessons.com/member/elisa-boynton
Live Performances - The Trekant Dancers featuring Amy Hakanson, will be performing for our students. Through music, dance, and costumes, students will experience folk culture and the history of Sweden and Norway.
Nordic Family Night
Thursday, February 21, 6:00 - 7:30
River Grove Gym
This is a FREE EVENT. Families are invited to tour River Grove’s own “Norse Hall,” create a craft, and play a game of Kubb. At 6:30 the “Trekant Dancers” will be performing traditional Nordic music and dance. Come join us!
