LOSD Communication Department Responsibilities

Communications/Messaging/Media Relations
- Write press releases and statements about District initiatives and policies for the press, parents, and staff in support of teaching and learning initiatives
- Research, write, and distribute parent/community-focused newsletters
- Facilitate and assist in change management initiatives throughout the District by delivering targeted messaging and trainings through various distribution channels
- Develop and deliver District branding strategy
- Provide communications and messaging support to the Superintendent, School Board, Bond Steering Committee, Bond Accountability Committee, District administrators, and principals; coordinate messages across communication channels
- Manage and facilitate the flow of information between stakeholders for the District
- Write and distribute press releases, media alerts, and position papers
- Build relationships with local, regional, and national press
- Photograph or video events and individuals, as needed to distribute on the web and through email
Community Engagement
- Provide logistics management and messaging for all community events and School Board town hall meetings
- Liaison to the Coordinating Council; organize agenda, distribute minutes, be the communication conduit between the committee and staff
- Provide tools and resources for cost effective deployment of communication and stakeholder engagement, including in-person meetings, translation services, and community surveys
- Identify and manage surveys and other research tools; use results to improve District relationships and operations
- Facilitate small and large group discussions, decision-making processes, and problem-solving groups
- Represent the District in all forums and community relations activities
- Facilitate two-way communication between the Board, District, parents, and the community at large
- Facilitate engagement between community groups and District staff, principals, and student groups when appropriate in order to improve relationships that ultimately support teaching and learning
Website Management
- Remediate and manage 2,500 web pages in order to ensure the website is accessible to all visitors
- Coordinate the District's website and District calendar in concert with 10 other websites and calendars
- Create visually appealing websites that features user-friendly design and clear navigation, based on research for effective marketing, engagement, and communication
- Provide multilingual website services
- Optimize all digital communications in the District in order to support teaching and learning, Bond initiatives, and diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives
- Facilitate, support and serve school and department web managers, acting as a coach to help staff keep their websites attractive, 508 compliant, and up to date
- Serve as the responsible go-to person for web support; communicates with staff members or groups about website functionality in any and all parts of the websites; makes content changes, trains and supports staff as needed
- Develop video tutorials to support District employees: create website accessible documents; new employee training sites and training videos as requested by other departments
- Deliver creative, engaging content to targeted audiences across multiple platforms
Diversity, Equity, Inclusion
- Support District diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives as a member of the District Equity Team and in support of the Director of Equity & Strategic Initiatives
- Represent the District in-person and in writing with sensitivity to cultural, ethnic, gender and religious diversity of students, staff, parents and community
- Nurture relationships with diverse community groups in order to support students and families
- Cultivate support for students and teachers from civic and community groups; facilitate those relationships
- Provide multilingual services for community meetings
- Lower participation barriers for parent and community members; include providing childcare and other services for community meetings
Crisis Communications
- Provide written support to Superintendent and District leadership in crisis situation
- Support incident responses, including letters to parents and community; talking points for leaders; press conferences is necessary
- Develop message and activate emergency communication channels when necessary (transportation delays, weather closings, school emergencies, etc.)
- Quickly create presentations, responses, press releases, media alerts, and social media notifications as needed
